The Second Lady, Samira Bawumia is confident that Ghana is blazing the trail in Africa when it comes to leaders who are ensuring that public interest is the underlying principle in government decision making. According to her, Africa can no longer wait after decades of being in the dark due to poor leadership, despite its rich and abundant natural resources. She said the time is now for the continent to experience a major transformation in all spheres, and Ghana is showing the way that with effective and dynamic leadership the public interest overrides personal interest. Mine workers dismissal: Goldfields reacts Media Reports

The management of Gold Fields Ghana has reacted to media reports that the company is getting ready to lay off about 1500 workers. The retrenchment is expected to affect most of its miners at the Tarkwa mine. The  report continued that the layoffs was to take effect in December, 2017. However, the company has issued a release reacting to the report: Gold Fields Ghana Limited (GFGL), operator of the Tarkwa gold mine, seeks to clarify misconceptions about its decision to adopt contract mining at the operation: Rising operational costs As the Tarkwa mine matures, it has to contend with the following cost drivers: – Deeper pits (meaning harder rocks, which translates into higher blasting costs) – Longer hauling distances for its fleet (meaning more fuel burn) – Increasing cost of reagents – High cost of exploration In addition to the above operational costs, there is also the year-on-year escalation of union-negotiated wage increases, the need to replace the mine’s aging flee...
