Thousands flee amid surge in ‘horrific violence’ in Democratic Republic of the Congo

The United Nations has warned that the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is facing a “humanitarian disaster of extraordinary proportions”, as violence and mass displacement is rapidly rising in the country’s southeast. A spokesperson for the UN’s refugee agency (UNHCR) said on Monday that entrenched intercommunal conflict between several ethnic groups in Tanganyika province was “triggering spiraling displacement and human rights abuses”. “Moreover, fierce clashes between the Congolese armed forces and militias have continued since the end of January, while new armed groups threaten to wreak more havoc in the province,” Andrej Mahecic said in a statement. The surge in violence in Tanganyika – an area that is home to about three million people – was largely between the Twa, Luba and other ethnic groups. Man attacked for supporting his lesbian wife

A Muslim man in Sakumono in Accra who has remained committed to his wife accused of engaging in lesbianism and has even given birth to another child with her has been suffering constant threats and attacks from the Muslim youth in his neighbourhood. According to eyewitness accounts after the latest attack this past Monday, February 19, Mr. Morrison, a businessman, was out of the country at the time his wife was first accused of engaging in the forbidden act with another woman during a birthday party in May 2016. A middle-aged mother of four, simply called Maggie has reportedly slumped and died just hours before her traditional marriage in the Ugbeide area of Mosogar, Delta State. According to a report by Vanguard, Maggie’s partner had decided to pay the bride price after years of being together. A man identified as Maxwell Chuks was caught somewhere in Lagos using MTN sim card attached to a sim pack to withdraw money from other people’s account. According to report, Maxwell Chuks inserts the sim pack into the ATM machine and type a code embedded on each account number written on a piece of paper for him. Found in his possession were a paper bearing account numbers of different people, MTN sim pack, and a pen. Now it seems robbery has gone digital. Small-scale miners demand immediate lift of ban.   The Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners is calling on government to immediately lift the ban on their activities to save its members from further financial crisis. According to executives of the Association, their members have incurred $551 million over the ban period and the cost could worsen the financial woes of members if the ban continues. Addressing a news conference in Kumasi, General Secretary of the Association Godwin Armah said the ban is an infringement on their rights considering the legal backing which they have to mine. “The ban on small-scale mining has curtailed the legal rights of our members who held legal titles to mine their concessions because our members went the legal, prescribed procedure to obtain their license to mine,” he told journalists on Wednesday. 3 arrested for illegal operations in a forest. The Anyinam District of the Forestry Commission has arrested three (3) for illegally entering the Atiwa Forest Reserved and cutting down trees. Briefing the media yesterday, the Anyinam district commissioner, Mr. Palma said, his men laid ambush at around 12am in the forest upon a tip off and got these guys arrested at exactly 5:30am. According to www.starmediaghana.com Eastern Regional Correspondent, Obrempong Nana Kwaku Ampomah, the names of the suspects are Richard Dompeh 25years, Kofi Asomanin 38years and Logo Kwabena 29years who all comes from Akwatia.
