The Overwhelming Development in SUHUM within just one year dazes the NDC – SUHUM MCE’s Outfit

The outfit of the MCE for Suhum, has today May 22nd, made a press statement in reference to a release made by a group called Concern Citizens in Suhum accusing her of stealing and destroying developmental projects done by the previous government. THE PRESS RELEASE IS AS FOLLOWS The dying opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Suhum constituency upon seeing the speeding rate of development in the Municipality has left them to be picking and acting. No wonder they are confused with dates. The one year achievements chalked by the Suhum Municipal Chief Executive, Hon Margaret Darko Darkwah and the Assembly seems to be a heavy blow to the NDC in Suhum as their eight years in power has no good story to tell to the people in the constituency. The exercise conducted by the “Suhum Development Agenda” identifying the developmental projects within the past one year was not done in a vacuum and for that matter extended consultation was considered both from the Assembly and the Commun...

Court gives toughest sentence to slave owners in Mauritania

Two slave owners in Mauritania have been jailed in a country where slavery remains widespread but convictions rare. The sentences of 10 and 20 years are said to be the toughest-ever for the crime in the West African country.   Slavery was outlawed in 1981 but 1% of the population are still living in bondage, human rights groups say. Black people of certain ethnic groups are often enslaved as domestic workers by lighter-skinned Mauritanians. The country has jailed more anti-slavery activists than slave owners, rights groups say.   The court in the north-western town of Nouadhibou gave a 20-year prison sentence to Hamoudi Ould Saleck. His father – who died before the trial ended – received the same sentence posthumously.   Both were accused of “reducing to slavery” a family, two of whom were children. A woman, Revea Mint Mohamed, was jailed for 10 years for keeping three slaves one of whom was a 29-year-old who had been kept since she was a small girl. ...

Zambian MP sentenced to death

Zambian MP sentenced to death A Zambian lawmaker has been sentenced to death by hanging after a court found him guilty of shooting dead a security guard. Keith Mukata, a member of the opposition United Party for National Development, was found guilty of first degree murder by the Lusaka High Court. Presiding judge Susan Wanjelani sentenced Mukata to death by hanging, but acquitted his girlfriend and co-accused Charmaine Musonda. The two were both accused of killing security guard Namakau Kalila Kwenda at a law firm in the capital. Justice Wanjelani said the fact three cartridges were found inside the gate confirms the deceased was shot by a person face to face. Mukata’s lawyers have indicated they will appeal the sentence. As much as Zambian laws provide for death penalties, convicts usually have their sentences commuted to life in prison instead.
