FULFILL YOUR PROMISE TO PROVE CRITICS WRONG – GNASSM REMINDS GOVERNMENT

Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners (GNASSM) want government to prove critics wrong by fulfilling the promise made to them base on success rate achieved in the fight against illegal mining.
Describing the 75% success rate as indicated in a recent publication by the government’s anti illegal mining taskforce “Operation Vanguard” as welcoming and timely, lifting the ban to allow licensed small scale miners back to work will close the chapter on critics propagating rumours that NPP government is against small scale mining.
The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Hon. John Peter Amewu just after announcing another three more months extension of the ban after the expiry of an earlier six months in September 2017, did indicate in a meeting with the leadership of the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners that and I quote “We’ ve only been able to achieve 15% of the set target and the ban can only be lifted if we are able to achieve 55-65% of the set target”.
Apart from the sector minister, his deputy Hon Benito Owusu Bio, former CEO of Minerals Commission Ben Aryee, Chief Director and other top officials of the minstry were all at the meeting held at the conference room of the ministry which was covered and reported by the media.
Meanwhile with the support of GNASSM Taskforce, tremendous efforts to rid off recalcitrant illegal small scale miners is on record.
According to the Association, news of the achievement did not come as a suprise because currently there is drastic reduction in the pollution level of some rivers and a typical example is portion of River Offin at Adiembra in the Atwima Mponua District of Ashanti region.
Available records indicate that Operation Vanguard alone has arrested and handed over to Police over Thousand, One Hundred and Twenty-Nine (1129) illegal miners and destroyed Seven Thousand (7000) mining equipments.
In addition, GNASSM Taskforce has arrested and handed over to Police Nine Hundred (900) suspects and destroyed Six Thousand (6000) mining equipments
The afore mentioned statistics undoubtedly confirms the 75% success rate which accounts for 10% more than the needed 65% to necessitate the lift of the ban as indicated by the sector minister.
Members of GNASSM have paid dearly due to the effects of the over one year ban and as such, the time is due. The promise needs no extension.
After learning our lessons, government as a matter of urgency should lift the ban for the licensed small scale miners to return to work and as part of protecting our business for posterity, we will roll out modalities aim at strengthning surveillance and supervision to totally achieve the government’s target.
GNASSM duly recommends government for taking the bold initiative, the Operation Vanguard, GNASSM Taskforce, the Media Coalition against Illegal Mining and itself for working together to forestall our nation from further environmental degradation.
