NPP FAR BETTER THAN NDC IN CREATING EMPLOYMENT AVENUES FOR GHANAIANS – TECHIMAN SOUTH MP
The unemployment situation in Ghana remains a topical issue of concern and discussion in Ghana today. Successive governments over the past 2 decades since the return of this nation to constitutional democracy in 1992 have had to grapple with the issue of solving the unemployment situation that has bedevilled this country.
Of late, several arguments have been raised as to which political party, in this 4th republic, has the best records in taking the nation out of this quagmire which seek to be gaining grounds.
In the latest twist, the honourable Member of Parliament for Techiman South Constituency in the Brong Ahafo region, Hon. Henry Yeboah Yiadom-Boachie has stated emphatically that the NDC is a mismatch for the NPP as far as the issue of job creation is concerned.
Speaking to Nana Sieh Amakye of Classic FM in an interview at Techiman on Wednesday 10th October, 2018, the Honourable Member, who is also a member of the Employment and Labour Relations Committee of Ghana’s Parliament opined that the NPP government has a better record of rolling out innovative ideas that go a long way to create employment for the youth of this nation than the NDC.
When asked to support his assertion, the Hon. Yiadom-Boachie recounted how the first NPP government under the leadership of former president John Agyekum Kuffour between 2001-2008 was creative enough to introduce the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP) which saw over 30,000 youth gainfully employed in the sectors of health, education, sanitation, internal security and many others.
The honourable member for the august house further corroborated his assertion with data from the Ghana News Agency (GNA) which revealed that between 2001 to 2008, 45,000 full time jobs were created through afforestation and about 1.1 million people employed on part-time basis. “My brother, consider the number of people employed across the country as School feeding caterers and matrons, the NHIS officials manning the various district and regional health insurance offices all over the country”, he noted.
According to the Techiman South legislator, the NDC on the contrary, despite having tasted power more than the NPP in the 4th republic, have nothing concrete to show for as their effort in creating job opportunities for Ghanaians. He lamented, for instance, that the NDC rather left Ghanaians with nothing but increased unemployment rate, mismanagement of the economy and almost collapsed the youth employment programme after merely changing the name from NYEP to YEA with nothing new to add to improve upon it.
Hon. H.Y. Yiadom-Boachie further stated, the erstwhile NDC government worsened the unemployment situation when it signed up for an IMF programme which saw a freeze on the public sector employment for almost 4 years as a result of the conditionalities attached to the IMF loans.
In the view of the affable MP, the Nana Addo/Bawumia led NPP’s 21 month old government has even done far more better in terms of job creation than the total 16-year rule of the NDC.
His claim was premised on the information released to the media by the Minister designate for Information, Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah on Monday, 8th October, 2018, that the current administration had employed 145,000 Ghanaians so far. He gave the details as follows;
100,000 graduates for NABCO
24,033 health workers who were neglected for the past 4 years.
20,000 Afforestation workers.
9,572 teachers and educational workers.
2,700 Agric Extension officers.
3,527 Security officers.
Clearance given for 4,000 people to be recruited into the Ghana Police Service.
Ongoing recruitment into the military, immigration, Prisons and Fire Service.
Youth Employment has also recruited some people for community policing to augment the efforts of the police force.
G.E.S is in the process of recruiting additional 8,000 teachers for the SHS level due to the Double Track system.
In his concluding remarks, the Honourable MP for the good people of Techiman South cautioned “well meaning Ghanaians not to make the mistake of voting the nation’s detractors, the NDC back to power in 2020.”
